Overview
SWCC produces more than 1B m3 of water per year and significant bi-products (~ 65m tons of Sodium) through 28 desalination plants. SWCC made research shows that certain valuable minerals/ions are of value & could be extracted from brine. The research resulted that SWCC produces approx. 3.7 billion m3 of brine in 2014 as a by-product of 1.1 billion m3 of desalinated water.
Findings:
1.Salts and magnesium compounds are currently techno economically feasible and candidates for by-product commercialization.
2.Growing desalination industry globally driving technology innovation leading to growing focus on brine management (near ZLD) and by-product commercialization, with early indications of trending lower costs, lower energy requirements, and higher recovery of water and other resources
